Most childcare and day care services provided by registered nurseries, childminders and playgroups are exempt from VAT as welfare services. Other income, such as extracurricular clubs, trips or merchandise, may be treated differently, so we review your full range of income to confirm your correct VAT position.
Local authority funded hours payments and any parent top-up fees both count towards your business turnover. We help you reconcile the funded hours payments you receive against your invoicing, so your income is recorded accurately and consistently.
Tax-Free Childcare is a government scheme where parents pay into an online account and receive a top-up of £2 for every £8 they pay in, up to £2,000 a year per child. Parents then pay you from this account like any other childcare payment, so it does not change how you record your fee income, though it is useful to understand when discussing fees with parents.
Many childcare providers start as sole traders or partnerships for simplicity. A limited company can become more tax-efficient as your income grows or if you plan to open further settings, though it brings extra reporting requirements. We talk through the numbers and the practical differences based on your plans.
If your only income is exempt childcare fees, you generally cannot register for VAT. However, if you also have taxable income, such as a shop, extracurricular activities or catering, exceeding the £90,000 registration threshold, you may need to register and deal with partial exemption rules. We review your income streams to confirm your position.
Nursery staff must be paid through PAYE, with tax, National Insurance and, where eligible, pension contributions calculated and reported to HMRC each pay period. We run this for you, including auto-enrolment duties, so your team is paid correctly and on time.
